Orange Already in Bed with the iPhone?

Most rumors regarding the launch of the iPhone in Europe are no more than that. However, every once in a while a new one pops up, that instead of regurgitating the same thing as all rumors before actually brings a great deal of information that had not been previously mentioned to the table. Of course, rumors are rumors, but this latest one about Orange and the iPhone is worth taking a closer
look at.

According to MacScoop sources:
"The word among employees inside Orange is that the company has been doing everything it could to close a deal for the iPhone in the French market. Sales teams who are in charge of the consumer market are even said to have already started preparing for the launch since last month, just in case, while the marketing division already has a advertising plan in the works.
Orange made its first offer to Apple during late May or early June according to our sources. It included the purchase of at least 50,000 units for stock so as to ensure availability for a November launch and sharing an undisclosed part of its customers' subscriptions revenue with Apple. The initial purchase quantity was subject to re-adjustment, depending on how successful would be the U.S. launch of the iPhone.
Though Orange has a strong retail presence in France, the French retailer, Fnac, could compensate for Apple's lack of retail presence in the country. The store within-a-store model has already started being put in place under the "Apple Shop" brand in some Paris-based Fnac store locations."

While most rumors speculate that the deals in Europe are still not struck, that seems unlikely at this time. Apple can now provide a clear image of how the iPhone is doing, its sales, as well as the number of customers that switched carriers because of the device. As such, there is little reason for negotiations to still be taking place. In fact, it makes a lot more sense for the deals to have been struck already leaving the companies to prepare for the launch and make all the changes that are necessary to ensure that the iPhone can be fully enjoyed by customers. The lack of a strong retail presence for Apple in Europe is yet another reason why the company can’t afford delays in striking deals.

Lindsay Lohan drinking again

The actress, who entered rehab earlier this year to be treated for alcoholism, partied in New York without lover Calum Best last week, and has reportedly worried friends by hitting the bottle again.

A source told the New York Post newspaper: "Lindsay hit the Anchor Bar with two pals and was spotted drinking vodka straight from the bottle."

After leaving the Anchor Bar, Lindsay, 20, headed to the Sway nightclub and danced for an hour before returning to Anchor.

The 'Mean Girls' actress then hopped on a private jet and flew back to Los Angeles at 3am.

Despite reports Calum - who is a renowned womaniser - has cheated on Lindsay several times since they began dating last month, the pair are said to still be very much an item.

A source said: "Lindsay and Calum are still going strong."

Lindsay's representative had no comment on claims the actress had been drinking vodka.

Micro-Blogging With Tumblr

This past week I spent some time setting up a site using the micro-blogging (or tumblelogging) tool Tumblr. The service is extremely easy to use and definitely worth checking out if you are either looking to get into blogging but don't relish the idea of writing long posts or are simply looking to create another site as an outlet for smaller bits of information.

Tumblr allows you to create six different kinds of posts: Regular Post, Photo, Quote, Link, Conversation, Video. These posts work exactly as their titles suggest, Tumblr simply gives you an easy template in which to input them and then styles them nicely for presentation on your page. Photos can either be uploaded to your Tumblr site or pulled in using a link. The same is true with videos which can either be embedded or pulled in using a link. Quote and Conversation are two interesting micro-blogging categories that are perfectly suited for Tumblr. While it may seem pointless on a regular blog to create an entire post that is simply a quotation, on Tumblr this is perfectly acceptable.

Tumblr has a bookmarks bar button so you can easily share something on your Tumblr site that you find while browsing the web. Clicking on the button displays a pop-up window which gives you the option of which category to put your newly found content in. It makes posting to Tumblr very fast and efficient.

While it may not look like it at first glance, each post on Tumblr has a permalink that is usually revealed by a tiny black box with an arrow in the right hand corner of a post on rollover. This ensures that your posts are still submittable to sites like Digg and Del.icio.us. Tumblr also features built-in RSS capabilities for your site so readers can easily subscribe to your work.

There are currently five nicely designed, minimalist templates you can choose from for your site. The colors of the various elements on these template is easily editable using the color menu below the theme select. Tumblr also gives you the option to completely customize your site. This is very nice if you know CSS and HTML.

Unique Visitors May Not Be So Unique

When website visitors are tracked, either for the purpose of calculating audience size or to keep track of the number of advertisements you are serving, one of the most interesting metrics to look at (at least traditionally) is the number of unique monthly visitors to your content. According to a study released by ComScore today, however, your unique visitors may not be unique at all.

Most services that track web metrics count unique visitors by using cookies. According to ComScore's study, these internal web analytics softwares will on average over-count your audience by 250%. Which means that your audience is actually 150% smaller than you think it is - based on the numbers these analytics packages give you. What's worse is that if you have a technology-savvy audience (i.e. majority of the seo, smo, smm, audience) then your audience maybe overstated by a factor of 1,250% per month! The latter of the two facts is because technology-savvy computer users delete cookies quite frequently and therefore,

These 'serial resetters' have the potential to wildly inflate a site's internal unique visitor tally, because just one set of 'eyeballs' at the site may be counted as 10 or more unique visitors over the course of a month. The result is a highly inflated estimate of unique visitors for sites that rely on cookies to count their audience.

The conclusion, as Fred mentions, we ultimately draw from this is that,

You cannot rely on your own analytics data. You need third party data as well. That's not to say that third party data (primarily panel data) is perfect either. You have to triangulate between all the numbers to get a decent view of what's actually going on.

Geeks.com Does $99 v1 Extenders

Linksys v1 Media Center Extender | $99 (Geeks.com) Geeks.com has Linksys v1 Media Center Extenders for $99 again. It’s a nice pick up it you don’t plan on upgrading to Vista right off the bat as v1 Extenders will no longer connect to Vista. I believe they are referbs, but it doesn’t seem to note. If you search their website you will find that they do sell referbs, at a price of $124.99, which is noted on the ad as the regular price.

Happy buying, remember it doesn’t work with Vista.

Ever wonder how you can make a quick buck? If you are a blogger there are services out there that will pay you to do reviews on a specific website and today Shoemoney just did one on HarpzOn.com for $2500.

I personally have never seen anyone pay $2500 for a blog post, so I decided to do a quick interview with Shoemoney.

Question: How many inquires have you received at the $2500 rate?
Answer: I have gotten tapped 4 times to do paid reviews by ReviewMe.

Question: So far it seems you have only done 1 paid review, why did you turn down those other 3 inquires?
Answer: Basically I turn down anything that is not related to making money online, affiliate marketing... For instance, of the 3 I turned down 2 were for travel websites and 1 was an insurance site.

Question: Do you think $2500 is worth it?
Answer: I think this is more of a question for the person purchasing the review. Eventually I blog about most great products and sites related to mine but if you are looking for a faster track then buying your way on my site could possibly be a great deal for you. It's kind of like with search engines, yes with SEO you have a chance to someday show up at the top for a keyword but for a price they will sell you exposure.

Question: How much of that $2500 do you get?
Answer: To be honest I do not know. I just did my first paid review. I will tell you I have no special deal with ReviewMe so whatever there normal revshare is, that is what I will get.

Question: How did you get a review on shoemoney.com to be worth $2500 in ReviewMe, doesn't it stop at $250?
Answer: It's just what my page was valued at by ReviewMe. I see some in there for $750 so I know it goes higher.

How to Write the Right Title for Digg

Yes it's true, content is king. If your content is great, if your service is unparalleled and your product truly novel, nothing will stand in its way, right? Well not entirely. If you are to truly take advantage of all socially driven sites have to offer, you need to focus on presentation. How you present yourself can take you long way, and here's how to do it right.

"Instead, to increase your chances of getting on Digg's homepage, try coming up with something unique and funny but don't forget to make sure it's still related to the article."

So how do you create the perfect title?

While we can ignore words like "Wii", "Google", "Apple", Linux", "Microsoft", "Mac", "PS3", "iTunes", "Windows", "Nintendo", "Digg", "iPod", the rest of the words give us an interesting insight into how to present yourself and into what exactly this particular community is looking for.

The words "new", "first", and "top" tell us that you have to be the first one to do something and do it well.

The word "launch" tells us that your chances of getting the attention you are looking for are higher on launch day. People like trying out new things, and being the first ones to give it a spin. Just keep in mind that if you're expecting to get Dugg on the launch day, make sure you can handle it.

The word "how" shows that the community likes to be told how to do something and do it well. If you are in the market of instructional writing, this one is for you.

The word "web" is quite obviously a sign that a web-based or web-related service is more tuned to the interests of the crowd.

The words "pictures" and "video" tell us that it is often better to use these mediums to present information in a quicker and more appealing way than just paragraphs upon paragraphs of text.

And lastly, the word "free" is self-explanatory. Just keep in mind that free is a tactic, not a business model.

So the next time you're launching a service, or a stroke of literary genius strikes you, don't forget to keep the above-mentioned words in mind (as long as they are applicable).

More Xbox 360 Elite Details Float Up

The San Jose Mercury News' Dean Takahashi has a bit more details on the rumored Xbox 360 Elite edition.

Game Informer had already reported that the new, black 360 would come with a 120-gig hard drive and HDMI out and sell for $479.

Takahashi adds that the new 360 will habe IPTV capabilities, something I suggested would make sense, and that the new design will also implement the a chip redesign, shifting from 90 nanometer to 65 nanometer, resulting in a significant drop in cost to Microsoft.

Takahashi adds that he thinks the introduction of the new 360, which will be produced in limited quantities, will not effect the price of the current core or 20-gig models.

I suspect that this new model will hit in April, with official word coming as early as next week. I also wouldn't be surprised that if consumer interest shifted to the newer model, that Microsoft drops the price on their current models by this holiday season. Brian Crecente
